Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the more well known modalities utilized by Chinese medicine. Sterile needles of varying lengths and gauges are used along the 15 acupuncture meridians and the body terrain. Different needles and techniques are selected to help restore balance of the energetic movements in the body and to increase blood flow, which help reduce symptoms and treat the root cause of disease. There are many different styles and techniques of acupuncture that have been developed throughout the long history of Chinese medicine. The techniques that are selected for use in a treatment are based on several factors, including the condition(s) being treated, what imbalances are revealed during the evaluation and diagnosis, and the comfort level of the patient.

Herbalism

Chinese Herbalism is another major component to the practice of Chinese medicine. There are several ways in which herbs can be administered, including raw herbs, which are first decocted into a medicinal tea, granular herbs, which are powdered and mixed with warm water, herbal pills, herbal tinctures, and herbal poultices and linaments for external use. Chinese herbs are prescribed by a trained practitioner in order to help restore balance to the body and treat acute and chronic disease. Herbs are compiled together into formulas, which are typically composed of four to twelve Chinese herbs. The herbs are composed of different flavors (bitter, salty, sweet, pungent, and sour) and natures (cold, cool, neutral, warm, and hot) which are combined into formulas to treat the symptoms and root of disease. Formulas are selected based on information gathered about a patient during the evaluation and diagnostic procedures, including pulse, tongue and abdominal diagnosis. Although many stores sell Chinese herbal products, it is important to consult a trained practitioner before starting any type of herbal regimen, as you can cause more harm to your body if you take herbs you do not need.
Erin primarily uses Classical formulas in her practice from the Chinese medical classics, the Shanghan Lun and Jinggui Yaolue, but is familiar with and utilizes modern formulas when applicable as well. Her most influential teachers in classical Chinese formulas are Arnaud Versluys and Heiner Fruehauf.
